Spiders fine-tune their webs like a musical instrument

Spiders use their vibrating webs almost like an external sense organ, allowing them to gather sonic information about their environment.

Spiders are some of God's finest Created musicians. Researchers from the universities of Oxford, Strathclyde and Sheffield have recently discovered that spider webs can be tuned to a wide range of harmonics, and that the spiders themselves are doing the tuning.

Spiders tune their webs in such a way to garner sensory information about their environment based on the vibrations. They are essentially using their webs like an external sense organ.

"Most spiders have poor eyesight and rely almost exclusively on the vibration of the silk in their web for sensory information," wrote Beth Mortimer of the Oxford Silk Group at Oxford University, who led the research. "The sound of silk can tell them what type of meal is entangled in their net and about the intentions and quality of a prospective mate. By plucking the silk like a guitar string and listening to the 'echoes,' the spider can also assess the condition of its web."

In order to properly gather this kind of information from their webs, the spiders must also tune their instrument accordingly. They meticulously control and adjust both the inherent properties of the silk and the tensions of the threads.

The spider sits in the middle of its web, monitoring the radius threads for vibrations. If an insect gets caught in any part of the web, the spider will feel the motion through the radius threads and make its way to the vibration source. In this way, the web extends the spider's sensory system over a much wider area. The spider might also leave the web, to retreat to a separate nest, while monitoring the web via a connected signal line.

Web-spinning spiders have an ability to tell the difference between vibrations from insect prey and vibrations from other sources (a leaf falling into the web, for example). Many kinds can also distinguish the characteristic vibrations of dangerous insects, such as wasps, from their preferred prey.

Evolution May Be the Victim of Spiders' Webs

Evolution May Be the Victim of Spiders' Webs (Creationmoments.com)
Job 8:13-14
"So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web."

For over a century, scientists have wondered about the embellishments that at least 78 species of spiders weave into their webs. The extra bars and Xs seem to have no obvious purpose. Some have suggested that they might be hiding spots, sun shields, bird warnings or insect lures. Now a researcher at the University of Kyoto may have discovered the purpose of these designs. If he is right, evolutionary theory may be the victim of these spiders' webs.

The Asian spider the researcher studied builds two different types of webs. When it is well fed, this spider adds silk bands along the web spokes. However, when this spider is hungry, it arranges these bands so that they spiral toward the center of the web. After testing the tension in both web types, he discovered that the webs with the spiral bands are much more sensitive to even the smallest insect than the banded webs.

In other words, the hungry spider is looking for any insect it might eat. Spiders that are not hungry are interested only in larger insects.

The question is: How could mindless evolution give these spiders the knowledge of structural engineering needed to create these designs? In addition, according to the evolutionary tree for spiders, this knowledge would have to have evolved at least nine times!

A much more logical and straightforward explanation is that the Creator gave spiders this knowledge when He made them.

Today's Creation Moment (CreationMoments.com)

An evolutionist or atheist would tell you that the knowledge of structional engineering and fine tuning of its web was because of "natural selection" over the magical/mysterious period of millions of years.

They could also show you, via a computer model, how their theory works. Evolution theory always includes the mindless millions of years time line to explain what the evolutionist can't explain and will leave it up to your imagination to figure out their tangled web of deception.

Don't get caught in the deceptive web of evolution theory that must include the magic unseen mix of millions of years to explain what God has Created.

(Romans 1:20)   For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Psalm 19:1-3 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 19:2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 19:3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
